What & where is Downriver, Michigan?

Downriver is a region of metro Detroit — a cluster of suburban communities south and southwest of Detroit in Wayne County, along or near the western shore of the Detroit River. It's not a single city; it's a shared identity across communities like Wyandotte, Trenton, Southgate, Allen Park, Taylor, and more.

Downriver is generally recognized as 18 cities and townships in southern Wayne County: Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron Township, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Riverview, Rockwood, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Woodhaven, and Wyandotte. Some broader definitions also fold in Dearborn and Dearborn Heights.

The Detroit River runs west past Detroit and Windsor, then bends south before emptying into Lake Erie — so the communities south of the city are reached by heading “downriver.” The term has been in use for over a century; it appears in a 1917 magazine published by the city of Wyandotte.

It depends on which communities you count, since Downriver is a regional label rather than one municipality. A widely cited figure: per a SEMCOG analysis of 2020 census data, the 18 Downriver cities and townships had a combined population of about 356,600.

Downriver is a genuine outdoor destination. Its crown jewel is the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge — the only international wildlife refuge in North America — anchored by Humbug Marsh in Trenton and Gibraltar, a globally recognized Ramsar wetland, with hiking trails, a 700-foot fishing pier, and the John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center. Lake Erie Metropark in Brownstown offers 1,607 acres of Great Lakes shoreline, a nature center, and the renowned Detroit River Hawk Watch — one of the best places in the Midwest to see migrating raptors each fall. Oakwoods Metropark adds woodland trails and a nature center along the Huron River, and Michigan's Iron Belle Trail and the Downriver Linked Greenways connect several of these parks for walking and biking. In Trenton, Elizabeth Park provides a classic Detroit River park setting.
